2002, Volume 5, Issue 8 General
Meeting-August 6 th, 2002 The meeting was
called to order by Dante' Higgins, Vice President Ted Bechtel Presiding.
Guests:
Kristin and Mike Martin are not only new guests but have become new members.
Welcome to our Club. Dave Karnes' son. J. O. and I were in Loma Linda
in Southern California and had to miss the August meeting. I want to thank Ted
for keeping notes for me. It's all I have to go by as something was wrong with
the recorder and it's just all garbled.
With J.O. in Loma Linda there
wasn't a treasurer's report for last month. He will be home for the Labor Day
weekend and will catch them up for the September meeting. However, he must return
to Southern California for another month.
Old
Business: Past Events; Dave gave a report on the "14 th Annual
Trans A Rama". There were 73 registrations. We had 45 cars competing in the car
show at Reliable on Saturday. Every class was represented with the 1st Generation
being the largest. The run to Jasper's on Friday night turned out well.
Winners for the evening were Penny Pack for People’s Choice, 1st Gen
was Rick Stephani, 2nd Gen went to Russ and Diane Horning, there were no entries
in the 3rd Gen, and 4th Gen went to Leo Brown. The award for Jasper's
Choice went Ed and beverly Souza.
Garlic
Festival: Six cars made this run. The traffic was very heavy with
a 45 minute delay and the cars had to park in the hay and dirt field. (Bet Dante'
loved that). No one was brave enough to try the garlic ice cream or the kangaroo
stakes.
The run to Reno for Hot August nights had seven cars make the
trip. There weren't any special activities planned in Reno, just to take a look
at all those beautiful cars covering a span of so many years. The Corvette club
was in full force. After seeing all there was to see there was a "non-birthday"
cruise to Tahoe for Dante'. Seven cars made the run to Marine World. With
discounted tickets it didn't hurt to much. New
Business: Upcoming Activities: Leo may have another bowling
and movie night in the near future. The swim party may be cancelled.
August
17 th: will be the first " Fairfield Car Show". Meet at Levitz on
Watt Avenue at 7am and leave at 7:30. After the car show there will be a caravan
back to Sacramento for the River Cats game. There will be fireworks after the
game - win or lose.
August
21 st: Mopar vs. Pontiac Night at Sacramento Race Way. Top gun
award for the Club at this event is between Ted Klein and Duane Cleveland.
Other upcoming events are Hangtown Car Show and another Dyno - Day. More at the
next meeting on these two events.
Another possible outing is on Thursday
nights at the Hot Rod Cafe next to The Sheepherders Inn on Folsom Blvd. just east
of Sunrise.
It is time to start thinking of officers for the year 2003
as nominations are due in October. We all know that with the threat to our lives,
Ted will not be running for President next year. However, we have several qualified
members of our Club that would do very well in that position. Another item to
be thinking about is a meeting place. In the past year our Club has almost out
grown the room at Reliable. We do have small turn outs occasionally but most of
the time we are pretty full.
Thanks again to Ted for the notes and I
will see you at the meeting in September.
With no further business the
motion to adjourned was submitted by Dante' Higgins, seconded by Mike Smith. (Wasn't
Frank Brown at the meeting?)
Respectfully submitted, Irene Raff, Secretary.
Woody's
Drive In/ Rivercats Game. Most
of our club had spent the day at the Fairfield Car Show however because Saturday
is one of my normal work days, I had decided to catch up with the club at Woody's
Drive In, so that is where this story begins.
I got to Woody's first and
had time for a beer at the bar before other people began to show up. The next
person to arrive was Pat Brown with her 2 niece's. We went ahead and had the staff
set up the tables for our club and ordered our dinners. It wasn't long before
all the people that were going had arrived. Everyone had a nice dinner, and then
the caravan to the Rivercat’s Game began.
Keith Thorson was nice enough
to let me hitch a ride with him, as I figured the fewer cars we had to try to
park the better! The caravan was mostly uneventful except for a few missed off
ramps that were easily corrected for.
We arrived at the Rivercats Stadium
and found a business that turns it's parking lot into preferred parking for visitors
to the stadium. It was really nice as it ws right outside the gate to the ball-field.
Since we still had about 45minutes until the Game started Leo and Dante tried
to get rid of the tickets that had been purchased for club members that could
not make it to the game. So we did end up with several honorary club members.
This was my first trip to a Rivercats game and it did not take me long to realize
that most people are not interested in the game, it is just an excuse for 14,000
Sacramentan's to have a giant party! And what a party it was! It even had an excellent
fireworks display after the game!
For those that were interested in the
game the Rivercats actually won with several big home runs!
Thank you
Dante and Leo for allowing me the opportunity to see one of these games first
hand!
Theo
